#existinphotographs“ for your children, for yourself, for the people who love you…” – Sue Bryce

What is #existinphotographs?

It is easy for people to get caught up in a competition when it comes to a craft. Things are no different when it comes to photography. Modern-day photographers tend to be hung up about things like who has the most followers on social media and which photographer is booking the most clients. Sadly, the real craft tends to take a back seat.

Go ahead and check your phone or camera. How many of your photos are NOT selfies and actually capture something meaningful and precious? Now, compare them to the countless selfies and other such photos that have no sentimental or long-term value. How many of them have you actually printed?

Choose to #existinphotographs

As chasing trends becomes more prevalent, photographers have started to focus more on capturing a social media following in their attempts to become ‘the next big thing.’ To combat this attitude, Sue Bryce, a master portrait photographer, came up with a fantastic campaign called #existinphotographs at the 2015 Photo Week conference.

This movement had the sole purpose of urging photographers to recognise true values in their medium and creating timeless photographs that can be cherished for ages. Portrait photography isn’t about drawing attention towards yourself but about leaving behind a legacy.

Similarly, professional photography isn’t simply a means to earn money for taking good pictures. Instead, photographers should be able to provide their clients with a unique experience that helps in capturing beautifully crafted images.

Why Is It Important?

When do you think was the last time you paid a professional portrait photographer in Worcestershire to create a memory that will last a lifetime? Was it after you graduated? On your wedding day? Is that all? If so, it’s finally time for you to #existinphotographs.

Exist in photographs for your children, for yourself, for the people who love you… – Sue Bryce

Think about it. Years later, when your children or your family ask to see your photos, what would you have to show them? Sure, a couple of fun selfies might summon a few nostalgic memories, but they wouldn’t go beyond that. However, if you choose to exist in photographs, you can visit my portrait photography studio in Worcester. Let’s create something beautiful you can cherish for generations to come.

A mark of trust from the Guild

Super happy to announce that my work has been reviewed by the judging panel at the Guild of Photographers and awarded the qualified status in the category of professional photography.

Guild ‘Qualified’ status refers to standards of competence

They reflect a level where the customer should be ‘pleased with the results’ when employing the services of a skilled photographer. In other words, it’s a professional ‘competence’ to a level where the Guild is willing to recognise the photographer as its ambassador. Those who achieve that level should be proud of doing so. I am!

If you are a potential customer, it is important to know that the Guild’s business-based qualifications are ‘live’ qualifications. Members subject to dip-samples at any time and can lose their qualifications should the Guild find they are no longer delivering the required standards. No organisation offers greater reassurance than this when booking a photographer for a portrait session, wedding or any other important event!

Qualified members are those fully insured and proving their capability to deliver a good quality professional service to clients. This is the level of acceptability one should expect from a professional photographer. It’s used as a benchmark when Guild is asked to act as an ‘Expert Witness’ and evaluate others work.

Getting the Qualified status with the Guild of Photographers consists of submitting a panel of 21 images taken within the last 2 years with a brief and an application form.

Qualified Status Certificate by Guild of Photographers for Renata Clarke

Here is my submission

Early days

My photography journey started just under 2 years ago. I signed up for an online photography diploma course and only few weeks later I ended up covering a charity fashion show. I’m a lover of makeup and beauty  so I started with the fashion photography. I loved contrasty light, gels and edgy looks. But at some point I discovered I wasn’t primarily focusing on the make up or wardrobe when taking my images. I was concentring on the model, her expression and my connection with her. From that moment on, I wanted to shoot the real people and real emotions. Without thinking twice, I moved on to the wedding photography. I loved being with people, “saving the day” and the challenge of getting “the shot” in all sorts of situations under the pressure. But there was still something missing.

On Being A Photographer

It’s only once I read the book “On being a Photographer” by David Hurn and then did a styled portrait shoot for my mum then saw her tears during a reveal session, I knew exactly what I wanted to do as a photographer. I made my mission to empower everyday women through the photoshoot experience to show them how truly beautiful they are. I wanted to make a difference for somebody. My styling and lighting evolved, become more subtle and soft. Finally I had more freedom with the editing too. Depicting make up or wardrobe exactly as they looked became irrelevant. As a result I chose as little elements and colours as possible to focus on the subject photographed. I find beauty in simplicity and that’s why I stay away from over-styling.

My submission consist of timeless and universally chic portraits. These show women’s true beauty and confidence. Help women embrace who they are and re-connect with the women they want to be.

My next challenge is creating a new body of work and pass the Craftsman level. This really is a challenge that pushes me way out of my comfort zone in lots of ways!

Shoot & Burn Photography and Full-Service Photography: Which Is Better? https://renataclarkephotography.com/shoot-burn-photography-vs-full-service-photography/ Fri, 10 Apr 2020 18:02:21 +0000 https://renataclarkephotography.com/?p=2955 Renata Clarke Portrait, Boudoir and Fashion Photography

Most portrait photographers can be placed in either of the two categories - ‘Shoot & Burn’ or ‘Full-Service.’ But which one is better?

Renata Clarke Portrait, Boudoir and Fashion Photography

Most UK portrait photographers can be divided into either of two categories: Shoot & Burn’ or ‘Full Service Photography’. You’re probably wondering what both of these categories offer and why their pricing options are so different? More importantly, you must be wondering which one is the right option for you.

If you are looking for a portrait and boudoir photographer in Worcestershire, read this post before booking your photoshoot.

‘Shoot & Burn’ Is Exactly What it Sounds Like

Shoot & Burn photographers turn up at a shoot location and will take 100+ photos of you and your loved ones for a specified period of time. After doing so, they will burn these images onto a USB, DVD, or CD drive. These photos will end up forgotten about and stored in a drawer after a period of self-printing and sharing on social media.

Some photographers will even quickly apply a filter to make the images look like they were post processed. However this is nothing different from you applying a filter on your phone. When it comes to studio lighting, these photographers often use these setups:

  • very bright diffused strobes or constant light placed all around their subjects (both sides and top). This is supposed to hide some skin imperfections by overly brightening the whole scene. Everything appears super soft and often an overall sharpness of the image is affected too.
  • one small strong light on the subject’s face to brighten it up often to the point of losing any skin texture and leaving the rest of the image very dark. This is supposed to give an edgy effect but in reality you end up with very overexposed face and featureless dark tones in your image. This will not translate well in a print.

Clients of Shoot & Burn studios never enjoy photographs to the fullest, and this is mainly because their service is quite like an assembly line or service at a fast-food chain. The photographers serve a large volume of clientele and deliver only medium or low-quality photographs. These studios prefer ‘quantity over quality’ and often attract clientele with pricing strategies instead of talent.

Full-Service Photography

These portrait photographers have a different approach entirely and believe in delivering excellent customer service. They put in the extra effort by spending more time with their clients to get to know what they exactly need.

Full-service photographers produce beautiful works of art by planning and designing your photography session with the print in mind. Once they have taken your photographs, their service will only have begun. These high-end portrait studios will then individually re-touch, tweak, and design your photographs to ensure they look great on screen and on print. They also send your images to be printed in high end exclusive print labs on an archival grade paper.

At the end of it all, you will not have hundreds of low-quality pictures to enjoy once and quickly forget about. Instead, you will be provided with albums, folio boxes, wall art, or tangible prints. A printed art that you can proudly boast among your friends and family or reminisce while walking through your home.

How Big Is the Difference?

These full-service, high-end portrait studios are quite like the fine-dining experience of the photography world. Here’s what they typically offer:

Step 1: A pre-photoshoot consultation to design your makeover and what you expect from the photographs. You will often be provided with preparation guides as well as an email series with the tips and tricks. These will help you make the most of your portrait shoot.

Step 2: A makeover and fully guided professional photoshoot. A universally chic soft glam style and up to 4 hour portrait photoshoot with a variety of outfits, background, poses to ensure a variety of images.

Step 3: Portrait retouching and editing to add an extra wow-factor to your photographs. This includes professionally retouching skin imperfections, fixing saturation, vibrancy, sharpness, clarity, shadows/highlights, fill, temperature, contrast, and exposure among so much more. This is a very crucial step for every high-end photography studio.

Step 4: The studio will deliver your pictures during an in person reveal session. You will see your finished images for the first time and select your absolute favourites.

On the other hand, Shoot & Burn studios skip steps 1 and 4 only delivering straight out of camera images of your photoshoot. So, which is it going to be?

Why professional photography prints matter

Anyone can take a picture, but not everyone can create a beautiful photograph. The act of snapping an image via a mobile phone is much different than the technique and talent required in the art of photography. As a professional portrait photographer in Worcester, I reflect my passion for my craft in every photo I produce. When you view my professionally printed images, you are witnessing the creativity, originality and emotion come alive in vivid colour and detail that only a physical print can capture.

I just want the digitals

Many people hire a professional photographer to do their portrait photoshoot or capture their wedding day. The photographers hand them a USB full of images so “they can print all they want” from those digital files. Clients go and grab a deal in a local supermarket or online and print them all much cheaper. Sounds like a great solution, right?

When you take those images down to your instant photo lab, what you get back is not what you imagined or even saw on your screen. They look dull, lifeless, and even perhaps so dark you can’t imagine what could be wrong.

So you spent some money for “professional results” and ended up with something anyone could take with their point and shoot camera. Far too often this is exactly what is happening to countless people. They wasted their money for quality you can never have in printed form from cheap “Shoot & Burn” photographers. However often photos printed from professionally taken and retouched images may look very different from what you see on the screen.

What difference does the printing by photographer make?

A professional portrait photographer does more than send your photos out for printing.  To take a great image and make it into a great print, a photographer:

  • Retouches the image, not only for people in the picture but the surroundings as well.
  • Uses calibrated monitor to ensure the correct colours, brightness, contrast and vibrancy are true to life.
  • Properly crops the picture, if needed.  Have you ever ordered a 5×7 from a local store and it comes back missing half a face?  The reason is because professional cameras take a picture at a 2:3 ratio.  So when you see your image, nothing will be cropped out if you print it at a size of 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, etc.  Unfortunately, frame manufacturers tend to sell frames at sizes such as 5×7, 8×10, 11×14, or 16×20.  This means that some of the image has to be cropped.  A photographer will see if the image can be cropped without losing the qualities that make it a good composition.
  • Sizes the image based upon the dimensions chosen.  The quality of a print depends on the number of pixels per inch (ppi) going to the printer. For a larger print you need at least 300 ppi.
  • Sharpens the image for the printer depending on the surface on which the image will be printed.  An image sharpened for printing on photographic paper may look too “crunchy” if printed on metal.  Likewise, an image printed on wood may need more sharpening.
  • Works with professional colour labs.  If you are ordering a large wall portrait valued in excess of £500, this job needs to be handled by a company known for its quality product and attention to detail.  In addition, a professional portrait photographer will work with a lab to ensure the colour reproduction is true. For instance this means calibrating monitor or working with correct colour spaces or ICC profiles provided by the lab.
  • chooses the right high quality paper for the image ensuring its durability and overall effect required. Some papers perform better with darker tones, others add more contrast. The best papers are certified to last 100 years or more.

The photographers do more than pressing a shutter. Behind every image are hours of practice, expensive gear and software, training, long conversations with our colleagues, membership in professional guilds, etc.  I put a lot of myself in the pictures I take. Why wouldn’t I want them to look their best for the people that will see them?

Printing your own photos from a “digital file” is likely to leave you more than disappointed, so get your printed images from your photographer. If they don’t offer them, or only offer “online ordering”, then consider hiring someone who does. Most “online ordering” isn’t from true professional labs and the photographer isn’t going to spend the time needed to properly prepare your images for print as well. You can’t make a 4×6 and 16×20 output the same identical thing and not lose quality. Take it from someone who once tried that route.

A must read for anyone thinking of booking a styled portrait or a boudoir photoshoot in one of the photography studios in Worcestershire

Being a portrait photographer I know the more in depth questions to ask the photographer I plan on hiring so that I get all the information I need or that may be useful. Today I am sharing some of those questions so that when you are looking to hire a photographer in Worcestershire, you can ask these questions as well so you can make the most informed decision possible!

What is your specialty?

One of the biggest problems in the industry is that many photographers in Worcester will do styled glamour portraits or boudoir shoots as an “also” thing. They offer a wide range of photography services from products to pets, interiors to industrial, family to weddings… the list goes on.

Very few have truly niched to the point where you look at their work and you know exactly what they do best. It’s very apparent in their portfolio. So if it’s not totally obvious, it’s really worth asking what your photographer enjoys shooting most and what their specialty is.

What does your session fee include?

Some portrait photographers employ a “shoot and share” or “shoot and burn” model.  This means that their packages are all inclusive and you will be getting your digital images as part of your session price. You have to decide upfront which package you are going for and how many images you are planning to get.

Other photographers use “In Person Sales.” This means that when you pay for your session you are generally paying for the consultations, hair & makeup, styling advice, session time, photographers time and talent.  This generally does not include any digital images or prints unless the package you choose specifies so.  There is general a separate viewing session when you will sit down with the photographer and view your images and order which images you would like.

Can you tell me about your process?

This is your chance to get the look behind the curtain. Any professional – no matter who – should have distilled their work into some semblance of a system. This is especially important for photographers. They should be able to articulate how they do what they do. How do they get consistent high quality results for their customers?

There is no concrete answer to this question. But you want to know whether or not their work stems from a carefully considered system that forms their decisions and moves the whole thing with a clarity and vision.

If someone tells you just to trust them – to just show up and let them work their magic – you’ve found someone who doesn’t know how they do what they do. And that’s not a good sign.

Do you have a list of terms and conditions?

This is just as much protection for the clients as it is for the photographer. Sometimes things don’t go 100% perfectly so the studio terms & conditions should clearly outline the basics like session fees, cancellations, rescheduling, delivery, licence and usage rights etc.

If there are no T’s & C’s you are likely to get burned when things go wrong.

What is your photographic style?

Another tricky question to ask your photographer that can normally yield a vague response because it’s really hard for any photographer that hasn’t been shooting for long enough. On top of this it’s something that keeps evolving constantly. So don’t expect a concrete answer here.

This is really about seeing how a person reacts to a challenging question. It’s a pressure thing. Because in photoshoots things don’t always go according to plan – it’s almost never easy. But knowing you’ve found a portrait photographer who works well under pressure is a very good thing.

Things to watch out – photographer telling you to go and have a look at their website, being defensive or dismissive.

Over the years, many women have experienced the natural high of a styled glamour portrait or a boudoir photoshoot. Essentially, a glamour portrait is focused on subject’s beauty and bringing out their best features whilst a boudoir photo session will have you pose for more intimate, romantic, and sensual pictures. You may even try one nude. What you choose should boil down to what you expect to achieve from it, and what could be a bigger motivation for boudoir photography than your own inhibitions?

Below are my top 5 reasons to try out a glamour portrait or a boudoir photography session:

  1. To Make Yourself Feel Empowered

Boudoir photography has its way of giving you a very strong sense of empowerment. After you’re done posing for a session, you will feel some therapeutic effects like a boost in confidence. Just as you would feel after a workout or a day at the mall, a boudoir session will have you feeling more confident about yourself. Imagine how empowering it would feel to see a beautiful portrait of yourself every day on your way out to work.

2. To Regain Self-Confidence after Winning Your Battle Against Cancer

The battle against breast cancer can take a huge toll on a woman’s body, and it saps out all of their self-confidence. Many of these women find themselves feeling lost because part of their identities has been changed for the rest of their life. When you’re done surviving, you forget all about your femininity. Boudoir photography can help you take back your femininity again and show the world how beautiful you really are.

3. To Celebrate Your Milestones in a Unique Way

Tired of the same anniversary or birthday celebrations? How about you think out of the box and celebrate by making memories by capturing the experience itself? You won’t just come out with stunning captures of yourself, but you will have also marked your milestones in the most memorable way possible.

4. You WILL Laugh

A lot! Laughter makes everything easier, and when you get instructions on how to slide across the floor, you’re going to laugh like you haven’t before! Since you’re about to push your comfort zone to the limits and grow in the most beautiful way, laughter is going to heel every fear you have ever had. Anyone who has been part of a boudoir photo shoot will tell you the same.

5. Why Waste an Opportunity to Get Pampered?

When was the last time you had your make-up and hair done for you while you sipped on some mimosa? Having that hour-ish of pampering just so you can glorify your natural beauty is what you need to calm your nerves. Don’t worry though, everyone is nervous their first time around, and you’re battling your inhibitions remember?

Are You Ready to See a Different Side of Yourself?

Let’s admit it. Choosing what to wear for your glam portraits can be super stressful! It’s enough to make anyone crazy, even photographers. But finding that perfect outfit is easier with a little bit of guidance.

For Starters

Incorporate layers and clothes with some texture to add visual interest to your look so that you have multiple posing and styling options. Jackets, sweaters, scarves, textured fabrics — all of these things add that extra oomph, making the difference between a basic image and an extraordinary one.

Choosing clothes that show movement in photographs can make a world of difference for your shoot. Dresses that catch the wind behind you, or jackets that you can work into your poses – open, closed, or wrapped around you. Clothes that show movement not only make images more impactful but also help your posing to give you more variety and options for what to do with your hands and posture.

Accessorize

I can’t stress this enough, accessorize! Accessories are one of the biggest contributors to visual interest in your look. Incorporate Jewelry like earrings, layered necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings, and leather-wrapped bracelets. Likewise, Sunglasses, Belts, Scarves, Handbags – all add variety to your images and also give you more posing options.

Bring whatever you have, and we can add them, or not, based on the look. Suspenders, Bowties, Hats – don’t stray too far from your usual style to the point that you aren’t comfortable but think outside the box. Try things you like but wouldn’t always wear that might give your image that extra-wow factor.

Which Body Shape Are You?

Triangle?

Is your chest narrow? Do you have a well-defined waistline? Is your bust smaller compared to your bottom? If ‘yes,’ then you have a triangular body shape. You need to aim to widen your shoulders and accentuate that waistline. Do so with the help of brightly colored tops with either a boat, square, sweetheart or strapless (tube) neckline. V-necks will work too!

To accentuate your body for the photoshoot, try to avoid wearing loose bottoms and skin-fitting tops.

Inverted Triangle?

If your shoulders are wider than your hips and if you have a medium to large bust, then you have an inverted-triangle body shape. Your aim should be to make your upper body seem smaller, and you can start by trying on dark-colored clothes. Try wearing tops that have a U or V-neckline, and something that ends right at your hip bone.

Let all your patterns, layers, and ruffles be at the bottom-half of your body, and try to wear your most minimalistic collections for your upper body. As long as you remember this, the camera is going to love you.

Hourglass?

If your waist and bust line are well-defined and of more or less the same width, then you have an hourglass figure. You should try to balance the upper and lower parts of your body. Try on tailored or fitted jackets that fall to your hip bone or wrap dresses. Make sure they aren’t too tight or too baggy.

While you can pull off almost everything with your body shape, you should stop wearing loose bottoms or tops. These might kill your overall look.

Apple?

If you have a bigger bust, wide waistline, and wide shoulders, then you have an apple figure. If you fall into this category, you need to try on light-colored clothes and try to throw in vertical slimming lines. If you’re about to wear a top, try a V-neck, which ends right below your hip bone. You could also try on A-line dresses that are made from light, flowing fabrics, especially the ones that have high waistlines.

Try to avoid wearing skinny jeans as well as figure-hugging tops and dresses. Instead, try to replace your waist belt with an upper waist belt so you can strike the right balance.

Rectangle?

If your bust and hip line are more or less the same width, and you have a smaller bust and no waist, you have a rectangular body shape. You should try and hide your waistline, and try to make your bust look bigger. Colorful mid to hip length blouses and tops or tunics with large prints should work wonders. They could either have a V-neck or a deep scoop.

To really shine during your portrait photoshoot, avoid wearing dresses that may be too overarching. These will consume your overall silhouette and will never look great.

Bonus Tips

Short?

If you are short, be careful with proportions. Choose short dresses or dresses with a high waist. Always wear heels to flatter your body.

Tall?

You are lucky! But there are some things that you need to keep in mind. Even if high heels are not a necessity, you can always go for medium-high heels for a more feminine look. Don’t choose dresses that are 3/4 long.

Skinny?

If you are skinny, things are much easier. But, if you are skinny with no shape, try to choose feminine cuts that will mark your waist.

Voluptuous?

If you are voluptuous, don’t choose large dresses and large clothes in general. Choose a dress with cleavage and choose bold colors.

I hope that by now, you have a better idea of how to dress for your styled portrait photoshoot. Now that you’re shining like the queen you are, all that’s left to do is hold your chin up and smile.

If you are considering having a professional glamour portrait photoshoot in Worcester, here is what you can expect when booking your luxury portrait experience with Renata Clarke Portraits.

CONSULTATIONS

Together, we design your photoshoot, colours and clothes you would like to wear. I will also send you guides with beauty preparation timeline as well as my style guide that will advise you on the best wardrobe options for your photoshoot.

We will also talk about how you are planning to display your photos at home and how we can create the images that will go with the colour scheme and style of your home. Then we will discuss the overall mood and how you’d like to look in your new portraits. We go through examples of different types of images and select the ones that best show your personality and feel like you.

Saying this, I always watch my clients carefully during the session to adjust their posing to how they naturally move and how confident they feel. The session is always a combination of your own style as well as my vision and feel of you. I observe how you present yourself, how you move and this helps me find the best poses and angles for your portraits. Sometimes only a tiny adjustment in pose or expression makes a huge difference. Also the same pose will look different with every person.

We will have two consultations, either in person in my studio, over the phone or video call. First one immediately after or during your booking and the second one around 1 week before your shoot, which will be more a try-on appointment, to finalise your wardrobe and accessories choice.

GLAM MAKEOVER & STYLING

This day is like a SPA Day! It is all about YOU! Whether you would like to celebrate a life milestone, treat yourself or your loved one to a dream photoshoot or just need a professional headshot for your LinkedIn profile – this experience will change the way you see your own beauty.

First, I will explain you the flow of your photoshoot with coordinated wardrobe and backdrops. A hair and make-up artist will make you look gorgeous. We will go for more of a timeless elegance look rather than any new makeup trends to ensure your images look chic decades from now. The makeup artist will only use products and techniques which look great in camera (so no heavy contouring or loads of layers of makeup).

We want you to absolutely love your images so be sure to let the artist know if you’d like any adjustments to your styling.

MAGAZINE STYLE PHOTOSHOOT

Once you’re dressed and ready, I will guide you though a series of poses designed to flatter your shape and showcase your beauty. I will connect with you in a way that captures genuine expressions and the light that shines from inside you. The photoshoot will take about 2 – 3 hours with 4 – 5 wardrobe changes. You get to wear multiple outfits so that you will have photos for a variety of occasions. Together, we will create the best portraits you have ever seen of yourself. At the end of your session we will set the date for your reveal and ordering appointment.

REVEAL & ORDERING

Your reveal and ordering appointment will be set approximately 2 -3 weeks from the date of your shoot. This will give me enough time to review and professionally retouch the best images.

On the day you will have a personal viewing session in my Worcester studio where I will present you your beautifully edited images for the first time. We will carefully review all your images one by one and you will select the ones you love most. My goal is to make sure you fall in love with them all! In this session, you’ll have the chance to decide on one of the portrait collections I offer or select items a la carte.

What you buy is entirely up to you, you only purchase what you really want. There is absolutely no minimum purchase or an obligation to buy afterwards. With that being said, I always do my best to create images that you’ll absolutely love and don’t want to be without 🙂
